#StackBounty: #pdf #ghostscript Is it possible to improve legibility of an old (La)TeX document with problematic fonts?

Bounty: 100

I’m reading an old(ish) paper from ~20 years ago. It looks like it was written in (La)Tex and eventually made into a PDF with Aladdiin GhostScript; so probably it was tex->dvi->ps->pdf or something like that.

Anyway, the on-screen legibility with several PDF readers I’ve tried is pretty horrid. Is it possible to reprocess the file somehow so as to improve it?

More info, taking the first paper as an example:
