On my main machine I am running Thunderbird with Lightning and have several CalDAV calendars connected. Furthermore there is also a CardDAV address book hooked up.

How can I transfer those CalDAV and CardDAV connections to a further machine?

To get the mentioned connections available on a second machine I have the following options:

  1. Create all connections completely from scratch (-> annoying)
  2. Copy the whole directory ~/.thunderbird to the new machine (-> impractical, because mail profiles would be copied as well)
  3. Copy only necessary files for calendars and the address book to the new machine (-> desired)

I want to avoid setting it up by hand. So: Which files do I have to copy from ~/.thunderbird?

My guess is something like:

  • File storage.db
  • File prefs.js (only the lines with “calendar”)
  • Directory calendar-data

But where is the connection for CardDAV stored?

I’m setting up a new server with Ubuntu 18.04.1 Nginx 1.14.0 and PHP 7.2.7 This is the first server that I try to setup with both IPv4 and IPv6 enabled. Everything works fine until I tested a page with a lot of missing images. It seems to take forever for the server to realise they are missing and respond to the http request. Some missing files give a HTTP status of “502 bad gateway”. When I remove the line “listen [::]:443 ssl http2;” in the nginx server conf file the problem is gone. Is it a DNS problem that causes these delays and 502 errors and what should I change in the setup?

The php script should not be the problem, because my old server (that is only IPv4 enabled and has even less memory), with the exact same page, loads very quick. Also, I think it is DNS related, because when I remove that line “listen [::]:443 ssl http2;” in the nginx server conf file, the problem is gone. When I cranck up the settings in /etc/php/7.2/fpm/pool.d/www.conf, errors go away and loading time comes close to the old server (see further below) even though that server has less memory, PHP version 5.5.9-1 Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS and Nginx 1.4.6.

When accessing the server through its IPv6 2a03:b0c0:0:1010::190:6001, there is a certificate mismatch notification. However the nginx server setup (see contents listed below) leads both IPv4 and IPv6 to the same certificate. Accessing the server through its IPv4 https://37.139.19.66 immediately shows https://test.vuyk.eu

The zone file records:

The hosts file might be a problem, however the problem persists if the hosts file is emptied all together. Here is the contents:

Edit: errors go away and loading time comes close to the old server when I cranck up the settings in /etc/php/7.2/fpm/pool.d/www.conf like so:

pm.max_children = 100
pm.start_servers = 20
pm.min_spare_servers = 20
pm.max_spare_servers = 30

The old server settings:

pm.max_children = 5
pm.start_servers = 2
pm.min_spare_servers = 1
pm.max_spare_servers = 3

Any idea what causes these differences?

I’m trying to install a pre-Iraq-Surge 4.4.9 PHP in a modern Apache 2.4.6 and want to run it in CGI mode.

The current configuration is as follows:

The PHP executable is /usr/local/php-4.4.9/bin/php

A test file exists in $documentroot/phphere/index.php of the virtual server, it contains:

Ok, so there is some problem in the Apache setup. But what?

The following is configured:

AddType application/x-httpd-php        .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

ScriptAlias /outsidephp             /usr/local/php-4.4.9/bin
Action      application/x-httpd-php /outsidephp/php

If I understand correctly, AddType tags any file ending in .php with MIME type application/x-httpd-php.

If PHP shall be run via CGI conventions, then the executable to run whenever a file with the MIME type application/x-httpd-php is requested is indicated with Action. The ScriptAlias gives an URL-path to the directory in which the php executable can be found. (This syntax sounds awkward though, why not have a single command for that?)

Additionally, the option ExecCGI has been set in the directory containing index.php and the SELinux contexts on that filesystem tree are marked with httpd_sys_script_exec_t.

Note that there is absolutely no

AddHandler cgi-script .php

in the configuration because THAT make Apache try to execute files ending in .php directly as scripts, which predictably fails with Error 500:

Error message:
End of script output before headers: index.php 

What’s wrong exactly?

How do I make Apache run

php index.php

instead of

php php

(i.e. quite probably php php index.php)

I love Visual Studio Code, but its Intellisense auto-complete drives me crazy and I make more typos with it than it helps. So I feel I must be using it wrong.

The problem is very hard to explain, so I have a screenshot below:

I typed in thi. I would hope/expect/want that autocomplete would only look for anything to autocomplete that contains thi in consecutive order. But it does not. Instead it looks for anything with the letters t, h, and i in them. They needn’t be next to each other, nor does the thing of interest even need to start with t.


I would like to “tame” auto-complete to only find consecutive letters. Is there a way to do this? (I use Python, Javascript, and SQL for most of my work, but I’m hoping the config is cross-language.)

Ideally, I would like the auto-complete to (a) require all letters be consecutive, (b) not require the thing of interest to start with those letters, and (c) ignore upper/lower case. But by far the most important issue to me is resolving (a).

SAN LUN ambiguity wrt performance

MSDN says to split read/write operations into a drive, sequential writes to another drive. (PRIMARY filegroup use typically data with read, update, write activity while LOG filegroup is sequential write mainly)
Documentation predates Storage Area Networks.

I get that grouping storage to read/write activity would optimise the heads on disk – minimise disk thrashing, sort of thing… but how is this dealt with when a “Disk” on the OS is an allocation to a storage pool derived from many disks?

The “bottleneck” of IO is then the IO controller on the SAN, and it controls the data flow from the data on striped groups of disks?
Meaning, LUN1 exposed to Server1 OS as 2 500GB drives, each split into 2 logical drives D:, E:; F:,G: of 250GB each: A database having a 750GB table created on a a filegroup of 4 files (D:f1.mdf, E:f2.ndf, F:f3.ndf, G:f4.ndf) will have parrallelism across all the logical drives (OS file driver optimised?) and SQL can use more file handler threads? but all the IO still comes through the LUN controller maxing at 1GB/sec.

Or is the DISK seperation then implied to be LUN level splits?
Meaning LUN1 250GB, LUN2 250GB, LUN3 250, LUN4 250… each exposed to the OS as a seperate physical drive, mapped to a logical drive each, and the SAME FILEGROUP split would ONLY then realise the benefit of IO optimised throughput?
I guess my question is then dependent on whether the SAN storage controller can sustain a 1GB/sec throughput on each LUN.

Or does it mean a storage controller for each LUN?

Can someone more experienced advise whether the gotcha of aligning the striping to the NTFS blocksize is participant in this discussion? OS NTFS allocation size blocks… oh! and the network packet size – is this also an influencing factor in terms of data throughput to the client? IPv6 vs IPv4 – is this a factor also?

I have tried

and reinstall drive manually still facing the same issue.
I have tried to switch drivers and reboot the computer.
